Infos

on coming Wednesday June 15, 2011 the Moon will move into Earth’s shadow again - with the result of a total lunar eclipse. For this eclipse central Europe is a special observation area, as the total eclipse ends when light of the sun set is still within the atmosphere. How would the red moon look like on twilight skies? When would it occur to be visible? Questions that significantly depend on the observation site.

The observation of totality near the horizon requires clear air and a free view to south-eastern directions. For Hessen in central Germany the top of Wasserkuppe in the Rhön mountains should be one of the best observations sites as it is the highest elevation of Hessen.

When the moon rises totally eclipsed it will not be visible, because the setting sun still provides too much light within the atmosphere. With progressing dusk the moon should be revealed within Earth’s shadow. The time when the moon first can be seen is one of the excitements expected for this eclipse – would it still be during totality, or would the lighter partial phase be needed to reveal the moon on the blue sky?

AstroNation.net in cooperation mit Eclipseland Experiences and the Radom Flug gGmbH, the operator of the radome on top of Wasserkuppe, will capture this event photographically on the evening of 15th June 2011.

Transmission site of this webcast is the radome, with 950m above sea level the highest point in Hessen (http://www.astronation.net/webcam/10022/342/mondfinsternis-juni-2011.html).
